GLOBAL OPERATIONS RESEARCH COMMUNICATION STRATEGY

The Population Council’s Africa, Asia and Near East, and Latin America and the Caribbean Operations Research and Technical Assistance Projects, are developing new global communication products for disseminating OR findings from all the three projects. Strategies include:

1. OPERATIONS RESEARCH SUMMARIES

  • Introduces a new dissemination channel in print media for the three OR Projects;
  • Features an organizing folder divided into 8 sections — each representing a reproductive health topic: (1) Maximizing Access and Quality; (2) Cost and Sustainability; (3) Postabortion Care; (4) RTIs, STIs, HIV/AIDS; (5) Contraceptive Options; (6) Gender and Empowerment; (7) Youth; and (8) Institutionalization of OR.
  • Helps organize, store and retrieve the summaries in this new series;
  • New series will be produced in English, French, and Spanish and distributed to a worldwide audience (over 5,000 key program managers, policymakers, and researchers);
  • Product coming up this Summer.

2. OPERATIONS RESEARCH ALTERNATIVES

  • Inter-regional newsletter to replace the three regional newsletters;
  • Has a new look. Changes include: masthead, use of Council and OR logos, two-color maximum (green and blue) and improved graphics;
  • Is redesigned for better accessibility. New elements include an editorial, cross-regional articles, stronger photographic presentation and quality;
  • Leading theme for Vol. 1 No. 1 is postabortion care;
  • Editorial board includes OR directors and USAID CTOs;
  • Product coming up this Fall.

3. CYBERSPACE! THE OR HOME PAGE ON THE INTERNET

  • Introduces a new dissemination medium for the three OR Projects on the World Wide Web (www);
  • Strengthens OR inter-regional collaboration, and economical dissemination of materials;
  • Is accessible to any Web browser via: http://www.popcouncil.org. The OR Home Page is located under “Operations Research and Technical Assistance;”
  • Features of the OR Home Page are: ANE Summaries; Africa Updates; Latin America Abstracts; OR announcements; and List of publications;
  • Links with Web sites of USAID, JHU/PCS, PRB, AVSC International and MSH;
  • Coming up next: electronic version of OR Summaries and the inter-regional newsletter.

4. OR E-MAIL NETWORK

  • Announcements summarize current activities in newsworthy, pithy broadsheets, distributed to the MAR (USAID/W’s Monthly Activity Report) and the OR E-Mail Network, a worldwide operations research listserve in population, family planning and reproductive health;
  • Focus on information about reproductive health topics;
  • Network is expanding fast (recipients up from 50 to nearly 300 since inception);
  • Continues to receive much positive feedback from USAID/W and U.S.-based CAs;
  • Listed in JHU/CCP’s Guide to Population, Health, and Development on the Internet;
  • Answers our priority audience’s expressed need for electronic communication of OR activities and findings.

We are committed to fostering close collaborative relationships with USAID Washington, USAID Missions, Collaborating Agencies, and members of the RHMWG and the fields they represent with an exchange of information and ideas.
